Webinar series theme

Terminology is at the intersection of different disciplines, including specialised lexicography, translation, technical communication, information retrieval, and knowledge engineering. Its role transcends boundaries, forming the foundation for organising and sharing specialised knowledge. Terminology enriches our understanding of specialised domains and enhances cross-disciplinary communication. In today’s multicultural landscape, where effective communication is essential, terminology is the cornerstone that facilitates dialogue and collaboration across linguistic and cultural barriers.
In today's technology-driven digital world, the integration of AI and the advancement of large language models (LLMs) is changing the ways we represent knowledge, write, and communicate. In this context, terminology plays a significant role in providing methods that allow for better descriptions, promoting interoperability through new standards and representation formats. This helps to organise and structure the ever-expanding realms of knowledge.
The webinar series titled “Terminology and Beyond”, jointly organised by the Linguistic Center of the NOVA University of Lisbon (CLUNL), Portugal, the Centro Studi in Terminologia Computazionale (CENTRICO), and the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies (DISLL) of the University of Padova, Italy, aims to showcase the essential role of terminology across various scientific disciplines and subject fields. Our aim is to provide a platform that gives voice to people from different backgrounds and cultures, facilitating debates.

Title: Neology in Terminology: Where do all the new terms come from?

Abstract: This inaugural webinar aims at setting the stage for explorations in terminology… and beyond, focusing on new terms: how they come into being and how they can be identified. In the first part, emphasis will be placed on defining some of the basic concepts of both terminology and neology, the most important being: how do new terms come into being? A couple of hypotheses will be examined before addressing the issue of how to detect new terms as they appear. In the second part, a series of terminology and neology processing methods and tools, along with experimental results, will be presented (e.g., text analysis engines, open-source softwares, etc.). The benefits and precautions related to data processing technologies will also be discussed.
